  1. Walter Broeckx says:

A rather interesting game from the ref.
A rather high score in total and even in the weighted decisions.

But with a few highly contested decisions the general impression was a bit different.

The sending off from Ivanovic was correct. Maybe Young was looking for the contact to go down but there was contact and Young would have been on his way to goal. Ivanovic last defender so a red card was correct.

The Torres sending off…. I felt it wasn’t a second yellow card because of the little contact on his right leg. But on the other hand Torres could have been send off in the first half for his studs on a Manchester United player. As that incident was the immediate follow up of a missed chance for Chelsea during the live game the focus was more on the missed chance than on the foul. He planted his studs just above the hip of the United player and caught his arm. They only showed to angles so we agreed with the decision from the ref at the time which was a yellow card. But if the foot of Torres would have landed on the chest of the United player he should have gotten a straight red in the first half.

The 3rd United goal should have been cancelled. Hernandez came back from an offside position. This was an error from the assistant who should have signalled it.
The ref pays the price for this miss from his assistant. An assistant who made a few mistakes on the day and all went in favour of United.

So one could say : Torres had to go at some point in this game. Ivanovic had to go. And the 3rd goal should have been cancelled.

A total of 9 wrong decisions in total (and 3 of them on the account of the assistant). I must say 6 wrong decisions is not that much for a top game.

Unfortunately for Clattenburg the wrong decisions all were high profile decisions and so the impression was that he had a bad game.

  2. Dogface says:

Good review and thanks for the comment Walter – it helps a lot!

  3. wisesageknowledge says:

It was viewed as a poor game, because it was a very poor game where he made himself a part of the game. A good referee gets decisions correct. A great one does it in a way that the match continues to flow, it doesn’t get out of control, and no one notices the ref is there. Mr. Clattenburg is neither – he disrupted the flow, allowed it to get out of control, and made a spectacle. He would be a rather good championship ref.

  4. Gary says:

Walter, I do not agree with you on this. You are saying two wrongs make a right and things balance out (Torres had to go at some point). This is something you have been arguing against for ever. This is the first time ever I feel that you allowed bias (against Chelsea) to influence you – please tell me I am wrong. If he gets all the high profile decisions wrong he had a bad game – full stop. Why do you justify this? Were you influenced by Chelsea’s accusations against Clattenburg? This took the focus away from his poor performance in my opinion. Perhaps i am guilty of that which i accuse you of, but i remember how pissed off I was during and immediately after the game. The decision to send Torres off was wrong – end of. The hernandes goal was wrong. The officials gifted manure 3 points. Same old Same old.

    • Walter Broeckx says:

The first yellow against Torres could have been a red card. Like said in my comment the replay focussed on the missed chance from Mata 3 seconds before and thus I only got two angles on that kick. I felt it should have been a red card but as we work in that we should be 100% sure to overturn a decision we could only agree with the yellow card. Maybe another angle would have changed our point of view.
We did gave the second yellow as a wrong decision however.

There is no real argument about the 3rd goal. It should have been cancelled. But I will not blame Clattenburg for that. The person who has to judge this was the assistant. An assistant that on a few occasions gave (wrong) things to United in this game.
In the end Clattenburg is the leader of his team. I can imagine that he wanted to kick his assistant when he found out the offside goal.

    • Walter Broeckx says:

I agree that the officialS gave MU the 3 points with the goal decision.

    • Walter Broeckx says:

Maybe the thought of another year with no United games played a part at the back of his head…..?

  5. Steve says:

Regarding the Torres sending off. The initial challenge on Torres there was very little connection but does that mean it was not a foul? As I remember it, it looked like he made none or very little attempt at the ball so as I a football fan not a ref thought it was a foul. Then Torres who had gone passed the foul challenge went down to easily trying to convince the ref of the foul challenge so again not being a ref but a fan thought that was a booking.

So to sum up a foul to Chelsea for the initial challenge but also a yellow for Torres for going down to easily. To me he could of stayed on his feet but saw the other Chelsea defender coming across went down a step after the challenge.

  6. Micko says:

Sorry Walter I have to agree with Gary here, I think you’re going easy on Clattenburg because of the allegations made against him by Chelsea. I do agree with you when you say “Maybe the thought of another year with no United games played a part at the back of his head” though.
