8 Responses to Match Review: Phil Dowd – West Bromwich Albion Vs Liverpool (3 – 0) [18/08/2012]

  1. Walter Broeckx says:

So a high score on things that mattered the most (goals and penalties) for Dowd.
And a great overall score on the competency in this game. +80% is a good result.

Not many mistakes in this game (only 7 wrong calls) but most of them going against Liverpool.

  2. Eric says:

Good review as far I remember, just one thing though, when Agger does the push from behind where he gets a red card for, it’s just outside the box, so no penalty.
But taking away a goal scoring opportunity like that should be rewarded with a penalty I guess ;).

Looked it up on utube to be sure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do3AWqyv14M

  3. RefReviewer03 says:

The push initiated just outside the area but looked to have continued just into it. It was close enough that the ref’s/linesman’s judgment on it was an acceptable decision.

  4. Martin says:

I’m not sure I understand something about the weighting and consistency of ‘number of decisions to be made’.
(and I did read this http://www.refereedecisions.co.uk/a-short-manual-on-how-to-understand-our-reviews/ first)
    For example:
Penalty decisions on 34 and 63 mins are given a weight of 3, but penalty decision on 58 only given a weight of 1.
    Why is that?

    also:
there are a number of yellow card decisions that go in as both ‘other’ and yellow card (41, 56, 74 & 93). Why is that?
Surely this inflates the significance of yellow cards and reduces the relative significance of penalties, goals and red cards because yellow cards have been allocated 2 decisions and the others have not?
Shouldn’t the other situations also become 2 decisions or yellow cards become 1 decision or the weights be reviewed?

Separate note about weighting not specific to this game/review:
Is it possible that an incorrect offside decision that would have given a clear 1-on-1 is also deserving of the 2 point weighting category or is that considered too ambiguous a definition/situation?

Just discovered this site from a post on http://tomkinstimes.com/ and think it’s a great idea. Sadly I’m not a qualified ref so can’t join the assessment team.

  5. Walter Broeckx says:

    Martin,
we check the database for your first comment. Thanks for pointing that out.

The reason why yellow cards and others are named twice is because this is how the ref should work.
First decision (other) : is there a foul or not. So that is something we judge.
Second decisions (yellow) : must I give a yellow card for this foul. We have to judge that also.

So we must count it as two separate decisions and mention it two times.

About the offside remark this is an interesting one. I will think about it but the problem is that we like to keep the rules the same for the whole season. But not a bad suggestion.

  6. Martin says:

Thanks for the reply Walter. Always good to feel involved.
I understand about keeping the rules the same the whole season.
I also understand the need to draw the line somewhere and not muddy the stats by opening up areas that are too subjective. If there is a way of representing offside decisions for clear chances then I think it’d help because a critical offside decision of that type can feel more of an injustice than a wrong penalty decision.

Re numbers of decisions and based on what you wrote – I understand why you would break it down as two decisions, but feel that if you do so for yellows, surely you should also take the same approach to red cards and penalties?
eg the Agger incident on 58 mins, shouldn’t that be:
    decision 1 – is it a foul?
    decision 2 – is it a penalty?
    decision 3 – is it bookable red/yellow?
and for the Carroll incident on 93 mins:
decision 1 – did Carroll do something wrong?
    decision 2 – bookable?

  7. Walter Broeckx says:

    Martin,
we are working on such things behind the scenes for the moment.

  8. Dogface says:

Updated this for the new system.
